Art

This school year at Schenck, we began with the familiar: Hello Kitty, Lisa Simpson, Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, and Spongebob. Once children were involved in drawing these images, which they did eagerly, it was easy to transition into more risk-taking with less familiar subjects. Eric Carle was the inspiration for collages created in his style. First there was the messy stage of splattering, sponging, and brushing paint on paper. After these Jackson Pollock-type paintings dried, students cut shapes from them and glued them onto white paper. Currently these very successful works are displayed in the halls of Schenck. 5th grade students have been working on a three-stage project in still-life. They have painted one composition in primary colors, one in secondary colors - each with tint and shade as well - and a third using their own choices of colors. In the process, they have learned a great deal about perspective, value, and color-mixing.

Our next subject will be snowflakes, inspired by the early photographs of Wilson Bentley. -Gayla Randolph, Art Teacher
